The theme for the school this year is Pirates. My third graders reviewed their art skills and worked on a collage piece of a pirate ship. We discussed the different parts of the boat and they decided on what details to add to their ship. They cut and pasted a ship together out of scrap paper and glued their ship onto "water" made out out of oil pastel lines and liquid watercolor.
My fourth graders discussed movement and how we can use line to create movement. We looked at several pictures of parrots as well as some paintings of some. "How did the artist tell us the parrot was in flight and not just sitting still? How was the composition laid out for us to read a story in the painting?" Those were the questions we asked ourselves in class. The students drew a parrot through a directed line drawing and observation from photographs. The students had to come up with a background to tell a story about the parrot. They then used oil pastels and liquid watercolors to finish it off.
